Samashti: Ten Avataras, One Destiny (YUVA 2025)
Report by Silambam Kathak Studenrt Komal Talati
The performance Ten Avataras, One Destiny was a captivating exploration of the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu, blending multiple classical Indian dance forms into one cohesive and powerful artistic expression. The narrative of the performance, based on the mythological story of Vishnu's incarnations, was brought to life through an intricate fusion of Kathak, Kuchipudi, Odissi, and Bharatanatyam. Each dance style added its own unique layer, while seamlessly working together to create a rich, dynamic piece. The melding of these distinct traditions showcased not only the versatility of the performers, but also the timeless relevance of the story of Vishnu’s avatars.
One of the most striking elements of the performance was the precision and power exhibited by the dancers, particularly Swarashri Shridhar, a Kathak performer. Her movements were nothing short of mesmerizing—clean, sharp, and executed with impeccable precision. She embodied the essence of Kathak’s storytelling through rhythm, expression, and footwork, infusing her performance with a commanding energy that matched the importance of the narrative. Her control and fluidity, especially in the fast chakkars and intricate footwork, left me in awe of her skill and power and story telling ability.
In addition to the impressive choreography, the coordination required to bring the piece to life was exceptional. The dancers worked in harmony with live musicians, ensuring that the timing and rhythm of the performance were perfectly synchronized. This not only added a layer of complexity but also highlighted the intricate relationship between dance and live music in classical Indian performance. One that I can appreciate and aspire to after last year’s Pragati Maarga performance in which we performed Padhant during a live performance for dancers. The balance between the multiple styles was carefully curated, allowing each form to shine while still contributing to the overall narrative of Vishnu’s avatars.
At the culmination of the performance, one of the dancers delivered a poignant summary that resonated deeply. This final scene was a powerful reflection on the eternal battle between good and evil, a theme central to the story of Vishnu's ten avatars. The dancer’s words beautifully encapsulated the underlying message of the entire performance: that the struggle between light and darkness is not just an external conflict, but one that resides within each of us. It emphasized that life is a journey of self-discovery, where we are constantly faced with choices that define our path.
In summary, the performance was a stunning example of artistic collaboration, showcasing the ability of Indian classical dance to evolve while still preserving its cultural roots. The blending of various styles, the meticulous attention to detail, and the flawless execution made Ten Avataras, One Destiny an unforgettable experience. It was a tribute not only to the story of Vishnu but also to the enduring beauty and complexity of Indian classical dance.
