Silambam Houston, along with hundreds of organizations across the country, received an abrupt notice in early May 2025 from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) withdrawing grant funds that had been previously offered for the 2025 fiscal year. This unexpected withdrawal leaves a $25,000 gap in our budget, and affects several of our core initiatives that empower emerging artists, including the YUVA festival, our student instructor and teacher training program, our RASA arts appreciation series and more.

We have appealed this decision, but there has been no communication from the NEA in response. We believe the appeal letter outlines with force and conviction our core values and mission, which we pledge to continue serving regardless of the outcome of this appeal.

Silambam Houston is Houston's premiere hub for Indian arts, recognized in 2023 as a ‘Houston Cultural Treasure’. The organization encompasses arts education, K-12 and community outreach, arts presentation, and arts performance activities in a spectrum of Indian classical and traditional art forms under a single non-profit umbrella.


Our community of Board members, faculty, staff, and supporters all share the Silambam values of artistic integrity in exploration, the pursuit of excellence, and meaningful contribution to community. All of our programming and activities are rooted in these core values.
