How old does my child have to be to start at Silambam?
Because of attention span, muscle development, and focusing ability, as well as the ability to sustain interest in the rigorous process of learning a classical art, we recommend that students begin classes at the age of 6 or 7. For students 5 and up, we offer a ‘lite’ version of our classes that are tailored to kindle interest without overly taxing the young child.
When can my dance/music student begin performing?
We do NOT place emphasis on performance at the early stages of learning an art form. In the first few years, we urge parents to be patient as we lay a solid foundation in technique. As our students progress to the Intermediate and Advanced levels, they will have plenty of opportunities to perform, first at small community events, then in our outreach events in area libraries, museums, and schools, and finally in our Dance Company.
Why does my dance student have to learn music?
We believe that dance and music go hand in hand, and that a dancer must know the basics of music to really understand her art. All our dance students are required to attend our music lessons (which are right before or after the dance lesson) at no extra cost. This can be waived if the student is already learning music elsewhere; please contact us if so.
