RASA is Silambam Houston’s annual summer intensive. Traditionally supported by grants from the Texas Commission on the Arts and the Houston Arts Alliance, RASA aims to offer a holistic and immersive experience that goes beyond traditional dance classes to give the students a broader and deeper understanding of the cultural underpinnings, historical significance, and current evolution of the Indian classical arts.
RASA 2019 focuses on the origin, similarities, and differences between different ‘baani-s’ or styles of Bharatanatyam, in addition to workshops in Kathak and Kuchipudi, as well as daily sessions in modern, jazz and ballet. Curated by Dr. Lavanya Rajagopalan, the intensive will be conducted July 22-26 by prominent Houston-area dancers and dance teachers Lavanya Prabu (of the Vazhuvoor baani of Bharatanatyam), Venugopal Josyula (of the Kalakshetra baani of Bharatanatyam), and Silambam faculty Kalpana Subbarao (Kathak), and Nilamani Venisetty (Kuchipudi), as well as Houston-based dancer/choreographer Keith Cross (ballet, modern, jazz).
